Masonic social, service and affinity organizations

Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association

The Widows Sons is an international Masonic motorcycle riding association with active Canadian provincial and regional organizations. Its members combine their identity as Freemasons with a shared interest in motorcycling, fellowship, charitable service and public Masonic awareness.

The organization is not a Masonic rite or degree system. It is an optional affinity organization whose full membership is generally drawn from Master Masons who satisfy the requirements of the relevant provincial body or Chapter.

How to become a Widows Son in Canada

  1. Step 1 β€” Become a Master Mason

A prospective full member must ordinarily be a Master Mason in good standing in a recognized Craft Lodge, subject to the rules of the relevant Widows Sons organization.

  2. Step 2 β€” Confirm jurisdictional eligibility

Recognition, Grand Lodge affiliation and membership requirements may vary. The applicant should confirm eligibility with both his own Grand Lodge and the Widows Sons Chapter concerned.

  3. Step 3 β€” Meet the riding requirements

The applicant must meet the motorcycle ownership, licensing, insurance, riding or engine-size requirements established by the relevant provincial organization or Chapter.

Ontario: Widows Sons Ontario currently states that members are non-brand-specific and that the motorcycle must be at least 500 cc. This Ontario rule does not apply automatically in any other province.

  4. Step 4 β€” Locate a Chapter

Contact the provincial organization or the nearest verified Chapter.

  5. Step 5 β€” Apply

Complete the Chapter’s current application or enquiry process.

  6. Step 6 β€” Chapter review

Acceptance is governed by the organization’s own rules. Being a Master Mason or motorcycle owner does not automatically guarantee membership.

  7. Step 7 β€” Orientation and participation

New members should receive guidance regarding riding conduct, safety, patches, public representation, charitable activities and Chapter expectations.

Membership rules, dues, motorcycle requirements, patch protocols and admission procedures may vary by province and Chapter.

How the Widows Sons relate to Freemasonry

The Widows Sons is composed of Freemasons but is not itself a Craft Grand Lodge, Lodge, rite or degree-conferring authority. Membership in the association does not confer Masonic status. A man must first obtain his Masonic status through a legitimate Craft Lodge.

Craft Lodge

  • Confers the foundational Masonic degrees
  • Governed by a Grand Lodge
  • Makes a candidate a Freemason
  • Central Masonic membership

Widows Sons

  • Does not confer Craft degrees
  • Riding, fellowship and charitable association
  • Generally requires existing Master Mason status
  • Optional membership
  • Organized through provincial and regional Chapters

York or Scottish Rite

  • Masonic degree or order systems
  • Separate governing authorities
  • Not prerequisites for Widows Sons membership unless a local rule specifically states otherwise

Shrine

  • Separate Masonic-related fraternal organization
  • Has its own eligibility and governance
  • Must not be confused with the Widows Sons

Family participation

Where officially confirmed, some organizations reference family-associated participation such as Widows Ladies, Widows Kiddos, and spouses, partners and children attending suitable public or family events. These categories do not exist in every province or Chapter, and family participants are not full Widows Sons members unless the organization itself uses that classification.

Youth-safety, privacy and image-consent rules apply. This resource never publishes the names of individual children, photographs identifying minors, private family contact information or private event locations involving youth.

Logo, patch and photographic accuracy

  • No Widows Sons patch, rocker or emblem is generated, redrawn, recoloured, reworded or assembled from generic motorcycle imagery.
  • No merchandise-vendor, forum or unofficial international image is presented as organizational regalia.
  • A patch from another country or Chapter is never used to represent a Canadian Chapter.
  • Photographs are used only from an official provincial or Chapter site, a verified official public page, a submitted media package or an authorized event photographer β€” with organization, event, location, date, status, source and permission recorded.
  • Where no authorized image has been verified, the written name is displayed instead. No image is better than an inaccurate patch.

Events and charity rides

Verified Chapters may publish charity rides, fundraisers, awareness events, parades, Lodge-supported events, family gatherings, memorial rides and community-service initiatives. Every listing must state:

  • Public, members-only or invited guests
  • Host Chapter and provincial organization
  • Date and time
  • Starting location, only when publicly released
  • Registration method
  • Rider requirements and passenger rules
  • Charity beneficiary
  • Public contact
  • Source and last verified date
  • Cancellation or weather policy, where provided

Private ride routes, private member meeting points and internal Chapter communications are never published.

Source requirements

Statements about membership requirements, motorcycle requirements, Chapter status, international affiliation, official patches, charity activity, Chapter locations, family categories and public events are attached to an official Widows Sons provincial or Chapter source, or to a Grand Lodge or Masonic district source that formally references the Chapter. General biker websites, patch sellers, forum posts and unofficial international lists are not used.
